Abstract

Soviet punitive and repressive bodies in the 40-50's of the twentieth century pursued the goal of destroying any opposition in western Ukraine. This goal was achieved by destroying or deporting classes hostile to the Communists and suppressing resistance. The staff of the bodies of internal affairs and state security committed a significant number of crimes and offenses in the region. In the general statistics of crimes committed by public authorities, the vast majority were crimes committed by law enforcement officers. Among them were cases of illegal detention, extrajudicial killings, robbery, banditry, theft, misappropriation of property, corruption, and sexual crimes. This state of affairs with violations of "Soviet law" was recognized by the party leadership of the republic and the region
