Abstract

The destruction of the city of Mariupol by Russian troops from the testimonies of internally displaced persons and open sources Summary In this article the author analyzed the process of capture of the city of Mariupol by Russian troops in the beginning of full-scale military invasion in the year of 2022 based on the testimonies of internally displaced persons. The author claims that Russians had a goal not only to capture Mariupol but also to show demonstrative massacre of its inhabitants as those who refused to accept pro-russian orientation in 2014. For this, Russians widely applied shelling of civilian infrastructure, deprived people of sources of food, water and medicine. Russians applied towards inhabitants of the city illegal detentions, tortures, filtration measures, deprivation of property, they mocked their dignity. In order to be prosecuted it was enough for the inhabitants of Mariupol to have at least a little bit of Ukrainian self-identification. Mentioned testimonies of inhabitants of Mariupol in this article allow to claim according to Rome Statute of International Criminal Court that actions of Russian troops and occupation administration were aimed at genocide against Ukrainians.
