Abstract: The unprovoked and brutal military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine in 2022 revealed that the strategic goal of the Russian military and political leadership was genocide against Ukrainians. In his speeches, Vladimir Putin questioned Ukraine's right to independent state existence and, at first glance, gave his subjects complete freedom of action in the destruction of all Ukrainians under an unclear and blurred call for denazification. Instead, the demilitarization of Ukraine announced by the Russian president means the destruction of its armed forces, and therefore the elimination of one of the main features of the state. The unprovoked and brutal military aggression of the Russian Federation against Ukraine in 2022 revealed that the strategic goal of the Russian military and political leadership was genocide against Ukrainians. Numerous crimes committed by the Russian military and authorities in Ukraine, according to the definition of the Rome Statute, fall precisely under the criminal-legal qualification of genocide. Bringing the Russians guilty of war crimes to justice will face numerous difficulties, besides, Russia refuses to recognize the validity of many international legal documents. In addition, Russian history has no precedents for admitting one's own guilt for crimes against humanity, punishing the guilty and paying compensation for the damage done. Russian society has a high level of tolerance for war crimes. It seems even more difficult to bring to criminal responsibility the President of the russian federation vladimir putin and representatives of his criminal power entourage in the conditions of their maintaining control over the Russian state machine. However, there are enough criminal procedural mechanisms to hold the Russian military and political leadership criminally responsible for the organization of war crimes in Ukraine and to apply real punishment. And the prospects of punishing the leadership of the Russian Federation for the genocide in Ukraine in 2022 can be realized through: 1) national courts in Ukraine with further formation of the relevant practice of the European Court of Human Rights; 2) International Criminal Court; 3) creation of an ad hoc international tribunal regarding Ukraine
